I am the original owner's son. I was at the dealership when the car was purchased from the Hillcrest Motor Company on Wilshire Blvd in Los Angeles (sorry, no purchase docs -- just an afidavit from me). I have a dated 1963 photo of my family and me next to the car.
The car was titled to me (the original owners son) in 1974 (approx) and repainted (over painted in matching enamal) in 1978 to seal the failing lacquer paint.
The car was driven weekly through 1986 . A valve grind, and a full set of lifetime midas exhaust was performed 2500 miles prior to parking it and a partial restoration was started. Fenders, engine and power systems, transmission, and front clip were separated, interior was removed. Restoration was halted and GARAGED on frame jack stands since 1987. All is intact and in place but not fully assembled.
Now the bad news.
- During the 1986 renovation, vandals broke in and smashed the windshield. A new (NOS) windshield was located in Maine, crated and installed for $2600. Then the same vandal broke in again and smashed the windshield, and all 4 side windows. After 12 juvenile court cases over 3 years the insurance company dropped the matter and the glass is still broken. The very rare wrap-around rear window is fine.
- Typical rust from the air intake grille water run-off is at the bottom of both front fenders but limited. This was a west coast car for much of its working life. The right front passenger floor received a temporary plate to slow a rust condition from the air conditioner drain -- expect to replact the floor pan under the glove compartment. There is also a small rust area at the base of the rear window pillar where the chrome starts its run along the top of the fin. The body, stainless, and chrome is in good shape with the exception of a small filled dent on the fender in front of the front right wheel and several filled parking dings on the driver side rear door.
- The glove compartment cardboard insert is shot (available online for about $40).
- The vinyl dashboard has the traditional crack in the middle and at the defroster outlets.
- The right front power vent window gear is missing a tooth so it must be urged to open. A spare is included.
- The driver's side metal window frame was cracked at one corner by the vandal and will need to be rewelded and re-chromed.
- There is a possible small crack in the exhaust manafold and a frozen bolt at that point on the cylinder closest to the passenger.
- The phenolic insulator between the carburator and intake manafold is flaking.
- The leather seal in the brake booster must be replaced.
- The gas tank was not drained -- it does not leak, but it must be inspected.
THE 2 PHOTOS OUTSIDE ARE OF A DIFFERENT but VERY similar car (shown is a model 62 missing one eyebrow, missing windshield wipers and driver mirror, not Sedan Deville) . Because the car for sale is garage storred on jacks and under covers it is difficult to photograph for this ad. The parts shown are predominantly the spares.
NOTE -- Contract for title will include requirement to restore, not part out; and right-of-first-refusal to repurchase at appraised fair market value if ever resold (in perpetuity).
